Lucky Gibraltar third graders had the opportunity on Thursday to meet with Ryan Hreljac, founder of the Ryan’s Well Foundation. His foundation was mentioned in the EL Language Arts book we have been studying this quarter called One Well: The Story of Water on Earth. We reached out to him, and he agreed to speak with the students through a Zoom meeting to share his passion for helping others have access to clean water. He speaks around the world and encourages all people to make a difference, no matter who you are or how old you are. He is an amazing inspiration who envisioned this dream to help others when he was only six years old. He persevered and made it happen! The Technology and Design class is restoring the ORIGINAL bear from the totem pole in Peninsula state Park. It was carved in 1927 and was taken down in the 50s (I think) due to rot and eventually replaced by a new one in 1970.
Mr. Hatch shares, "When we are finished with this restoration, it’s going to live in the clubhouse at the golf course. When we were rebuilding and stabilizing the base we took off some old plywood and found the date April 29, 1974. Thought that was interesting since it’s almost 50 years to the day since someone was working on this same task"
The Gibraltar eighth grade Technical Education class, under the direction of Nate Hatch, has teamed up with the Door County Parks Department to build bat condos. Students are learning light construction skills through this guided project with Mr. Hatch. Each bat condo is roughly the size of a large dog house on stilts and will be capable of providing a home to as many as three thousand bats. The students enjoyed having the Door County Parks Manager, Tim Kazmierczak come and speak to the group and explain the importance of the project. The students learned how their work can help restore the Little Brown bat population and combat the effects of White Nose Syndrome. The long-term goal is to have a bat condo in every county park.

TOYS FOR THE ANIMALS AT THE NEW ZOO! Did you know that all animals living in a zoo need what’s called “enrichment.”? This means they need things to play with to keep them from getting bored! Our Zoo Keepers are always creating new, fun, things for our animals to play with, and they reached out for help. So, Mrs. Miekle, Secondary Art Teacher, and Mrs. Thomas, Kindergarten Teacher, did a collaborative art lesson and service project with high school and kindergarten students. Many animals enjoy ripping and tearing into things to find their food, and these paper maché creations will be filled with all sorts of fun and tasty treats by the Zoo Keepers. They know exactly which animals enjoy the paper maché, and exactly what kinds of treats go best in a paper maché creation. Check out the great “toys” for the animals at the NEW Zoo. Our Gibraltar students had a blast with this learning and service opportunity!
SIGNING DAY! Mckailey Reisen and Braden Sitte each signed their letter of intent Friday, April 12 amongst their family, friends and coaches.
Mckailey will be joining the UW - Eau Claire Blugold Track and Field team with plans to compete in the hurdles and high jump. She will be pursuing a nursing degree and wants to send a special thanks to Coach Clay Buske for being an amazing coach and mentor.
Braden will be joining the UW - La Crosse Eagle Football team as a defensive back. He will be pursuing a degree in Exercise Sports Science and wants to send a special thanks to his parents and coaches throughout the years. He will also be participating in the WBCA All-Star Basketball game and the WFCA All-Star Football game and is raising money for Children’s Hospital.

Gibraltar Area Schools continues to be without power. Wisconsin Public Service on the scene stated that restoring power may take until 5:00 pm on Thursday 4/4. As such, the school will be closed on Thursday for all staff and students. #gibraltar24

The hydroponic growing machine produced beautiful lettuce thanks in large part to the Ecology Club President Abby Nelson and the kitchen staff. First Harvest, Fork Farms Grow Tower is now being enjoyed by students and staff starting on Monday, March 18

Isa Sweeney delivered 12 incredibly soft hand-crocheted hats for patients at the Door County Cancer Center. She contacted Door CANcer to accept her service project donation. Congratulations to Amelia VanBoxtel and Ashlynn Lautenbach as well as Hattie Tesnow and Sanskriti Rana -- they all advanced to the state competition in Madison later this spring!
The Advanced Metals and Design Students are working on this Monarch Butterfly sculpture in Tech Ed. The Monarch archway will be installed at Kendall Park in Baileys Harbor upon completion. It will be polished stainless steel and butterflies will be painted to look like Monarchs. Participating students include Beckett Johnson, Teddy Roth, Nolan Geisler, Garrett Tanck, and Cooper Gaddes. Great work, Mr. Hatch!
