GIBRALTAR ITALY TRIP: Here are a few of the pictures from the Spanish Club's trip to Italy this year. Big travels that included Venice, Verona, Florence, the Roman Colosseum, Roman Forum, Assis,, and the Vatican. A big shout-out to our chaperones for this trip. Gibraltar Track and Field had a great showing in La Crosse last weekend! The girls 4x100 Meter Relay of Aria Nordahl, Hayden Knudson, McKailey Reisen, and Bella Jones took 14th place. McKailey Reisen took 9th place in the High Jump. And McKailey Reisen ran a season-best in the 100 100-meter hurdles finishing 8th. Really proud of the team and their accomplishments this season!

Gibraltar Advanced Choir members take trip to Lawrence University for college tour and choir concert!

2nd Grade Field Trip to Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary! It was a beautiful day. They got to see and learn about frogs, ducks and turtles. The pond dig was awesome, waders and all. They scooped up a spider and some other pond creatures. Thank you Bay Beach for a wonderful field trip! #gibraltarclassof2034

On Thursday, our 5th Graders (the Class of 2031!) bridged into Middle School. Congratulations on completing Elementary School! Vikings movin’ on up!

It is the mission of Door County Project 180 to lead a healthy life and develop student leaders who can gather, share, and plan activities to encourage the community to make healthy choices. This year, the High School Project 180 members partnered for an activity with Mrs. Mackenzie's and Mrs. Henrigillis' 3rd-grade class and were matched with a pen pal. Throughout the year, they wrote notes back and forth to their pen pals to foster a mentoring relationship in a fun, meaningful, and academic way. While both high schoolers and third graders refined their letter-writing skills, they also formed positive relationships to help encourage a positive school culture. Last week, the two groups met up on the playground to finally meet their pen pal.

Gibraltar’s first graders recently learned about biomimicry (nature-inspired innovation). Students were challenged to design a scarecrow mask inspired by nature AND included a set of false eyes. Additionally, they learned about how engineers created Velcro, Japan’s bullet train, cooking tongs, and bicycle helmets through nature’s inspirations.

Ready for a heartwarming Gibraltar Elementary story? Yesterday, a first grader lost his tooth during music class. The music room does not have a sink, so he ran across the hallway to Ms. Krause's classroom with his bloody mouth and dangling tooth. As the tooth popped out, it unfortunately fell into the drain. This first grader was extremely upset. Ms. Krause knew what to do! She contacted our Maintenance department. Overnight, they opened the drain and found the tooth. Today this firstie was beaming as he was presented his "Lost Tooth".

On the evening of May 6th Gibraltar High School inducted the 2024 Class of National Honor Society candidates. Advisor Eric Schroeder shares, "We are excited to add them to the current NHS group and continue to serve Gibraltar and our Door County community." 25 seniors turned out on May 1st to read their original poetry at the Dickinson Poetry Series in Ephraim. This is part of a poetry outreach program for Gibraltar's senior class to engage with the community through poetry. We started the process in September through analysis of poetry and then students began to write their own poems. In the fall semester the class was fortunate to participate in a poetry workshop at Write On Door County that was sponsored by FOG. In spring semester the students transitioned from writing to workshopping their poems, some of them brought poems they had written in previous years. By late April it is time to bring their poetry to a public performance and we are honoured and grateful to be the invited speaker for May at the Dickinson Poetry Series . The students who attended were Leo Frisoni, Helen McCormack, Italia De La Torre, Gwen Sohns, Mckailey Reisen, Logan Mittermann, Isa Sweeney, Vanessa DeMarinis, Quincy Chomeau, Bekka Porter, Cora Carriere, Elyse Savard, Augie Wisniewski, Chloe Alexander, Harrison Schwab, Teddy Roth, Marshall Maltby, Payton Williams, Braden Sitte, Garrett Tanck, Lilla Szakala, Todd Tesnow, Abbey Nelson, Samara Jauregui, Cooper Gaddes. We are grateful to the sponsors and organizers of the Dickinson Poetry Series to provide this opportunity for students to share their original work with an appreciative and supportive audience.

ABBEY NELSON SELECTED LAKE MICHIGAN CHAMPION OF CONSERVATION! Abigail Nelson is recognized for her leadership in starting a cafeteria composting program at Gibraltar Area School District in Northern Door County. After the Gibraltar Ecology Club had been on a hiatus, Abigail saw a need for the club to begin again, with a renewed commitment to composting and recycling. She worked with the cafeteria staff and custodians to get the process going and also partnered with the Climate Change Coalition of Door County. To begin a composting program despite some challenges and opposition is a fantastic achievement and a true testament to her dedication toward environmental protection. Abigail plans to pursue a degree and career in environmental studies following graduation. “Beyond the composting initiative, Abbey has been incredibly involved in the Ecology Club’s other initiatives including tree planting, work on a rain garden at Evergreen Golf Course, attending public events, and reading to second graders within our school. Abbey showed a commitment to each of these Club activities, even when it was inconvenient to provide service. Abbey also saw the need to learn about the legislative process and attended a two-day Conservation Lobbying event for Door and Kewaunee Counties. Her senior year portends to have more activities that move forward her missions of enjoying and protecting nature.” -Mary Kate McCormack, Gibraltar High School Ecology Club Advisor The composting program is working to lessen fossil fuels otherwise used to transport waste to a landfill as well as reducing carbon emissions that would come from the landfill decomposition process. Instead, the food waste is being made into nutrient-rich soil. In 2022, the Champions of Conservation program added a new category to recognize a youth or youth group that demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of natural resource conservation and stewardship and promotes environmental awareness. Abigail has selected The Ridges Sanctuary as the recipient of their charitable award stipend. On Thursday, May 2nd two Gibraltar High School students were recognized by the Rotary Club of Sturgeon Bay. Helen McCormack, the daughter of Fran and Mary Kate McCormack, received recognition and a scholarship for Service Above Self. Helen plans to attend Yale University to study environmental engineering. Teddy Roth, the son of Britton Roth and Justin Roth, received recognition and a scholarship for Rising to the Challenge. Teddy plans to attend the University of Mississippi to study banking and finance.
