English 11 is the third of a four year English Language Arts program. The course focuses on an in depth study of American texts (such as short story, novels, poetry, essays, and other texts in a variety of media) as well as the ability to compose expository, analytical, and argumentative texts based on reading informational or literary texts. Compositions include analytical and argumentative pieces as well as narrative and creative pieces. In addition, students review elements of grammar and usage, practice communication skills, develop research techniques, and explore careers. A research project gives students an opportunity to practice writing a research paper and addresses citation systems such as MLA or APA. By the end of the course students will be prepared for the ACT summative assessment and to participate fully and productively in English 12.
